Flowers in my yard

I've been watching this plant for two years. It started about
the size of a golf ball and has grown to this. The stems that
you see sprout each year, but I never saw anything bloom
on them.

This year I saw purple flowers begin to appear.
The blooms are subtle, somewhat organized and somewhat
chaotic.

The furry leaves and star-shaped pre-blooms (top center) are
interesting.

I wonder what this plant is called? I found my start for it in the
grass along the sidewalk up the street.

Interesting shape -- different from most flowering plants.
It looks primitive, prehistoric to me.

These are not good photographs -- it was difficult to get the
camera to focus on the subtle and fuzzy characteristics
of the plant. But this exercise does show how a camera often
provides me with a better, closer look than I get from casual
observation. Next year I'll use a tripod and get some clearer
pictures.

All of the usual flowers are blooming the yard, too.
