A nice book written for children by Czech artist, Peter Sis. He lives
and raises his children in the US, and he wanted to help his kids
understand what it was like to grow up behind the Iron Curtain
(and watch it come down). I'd recommend this to anyone.

Gail read and liked a book by Bill Bryson, so I got this one for both
of us. Bill Bryson was born within a year or two of me, and he
describes what it was like for us to grow up in those days. No
matter when you were born, this book will bring back memories of
your childhood. It is also a good sociological study of what the
culture of the 50s and
growing up in the 50's was like.

There are so many trivia questions about Charlotte's Web and I
have never read it, so I thought I should.

I heard several pre-publication reviews of the book to the left, and I looked forward to getting it as soon as it came out.
Susan Jacoby traces the history of American anti-intellectualism, religious fundamentalism, junk thinking, dumming down of education, infotainment, etc. that have lead us to the place where we are now -- not only leaders who do not think or make decisions based on science and fact, but a general population that is more than willing to buy into all that junk. |
