The drive into the Needles section begins about 20 miles South of Moab and is
another 20 miles long.

A campsite that I was really tempted to use (for $10 per night). I could picture
myself with a fire and a cooler of beer, and breakfast in the morning. But I wanted
to watch Nascar and football on TV, so I stayed at a campground in town --
probably a mistake.

Like so many places out West, there was no one here except me. And this was
the holiday -- Labor Day.

I was enjoying the views and then...

my phone rang, way up here. It was Gail and her parents checking on me. They
were having a Labor Day cookout.

All I had was a melon.

But Canyonlands is a pretty nice place to enjoy a melon.

I was supposed to stay on the paved road, but the van pretended to be a jeep for
just a little drive. This picture might capture some of the feeling that you are
driving in the clouds up here.

View through the windshield.

During the drive back down...

I ran into this guy.

Camera shy.
