This is the view from my front door.

My room is on the right with two chairs in front of my window.

Within a block of Stockmen's there is a grocery...

a laundry...

the best restaurant I've ever eaten in -- The Star, a 100-year Basque tradition.

a folklore center...

Elko calls itself the home of cowboy poetry.

There is also another casino just across the parking lot.

And bars like Goldie's...

And the Silver Dollar Club (that's Stockmen's to the right)...

and the Stray Dog -- where I am going for cowboy entertainment tonight at 8:00.

Two years ago I visited Erv's Miner's Camp Saloon, but it was closed when I came
by last year (and still is). That's Stockmen's next door.

Last year I got attached to the Stumble Inn. It looks like it might be closed now --
it's hard to tell. I'll check back tonight.

I am cooking my breakfast each day at the city park up the street, next to the
museum. Several people walked by, cutting through the park on their way to
work. One lady said, "Are you cooking breakfast? -- that's pretty cool."

This guy came to see what smelled so good. Since he was big (and brown), I
would have been afraid of him before I met Hartley and Echo. Now that I know
a little about dogs, I could tell that he was friendly by the way his tail wagged.

I wanted to give him some bacon, but I was afraid he'd never leave. He tried to
wait me out -- first sitting and then laying next to the table.

I finished my breakfast with half of a melon, and I gave the other half to a lady
in a truck (from Oregon). I'll bet her story was interesting, but I didn't ask.

  Elko, Nevada

My favorite Northern Nevada town, besides Reno, is Elko. I am spending a few days at Stockmen's Casino and Hotel just as I did last year. I am paying $39 per night.
