Passing Kansas City where the baseball team is playing a night game. See the
"KC" on the blurred stadium?

Before it got dark, I stopped along the highway and arranged my bed in the back of the van.

I slept at a rest stop in Kansas, got up in the middle of the night and drove a couple
more hours, and stopped to sleep again at another rest stop. Here you see the
sun rising as I get up from my second sleep.

Before sleeping, I drove though Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and into Kansas.
During that stretch, I drove 700 miles, bought $130 worth of gas, and got 19 mpg
-- not bad since I was running the air conditioning the whole way and I have a load
-- not a heavy one -- in the back.

I'm driving a little over 70 mph on the level roads, and slower on the upslopes.

I stopped at the Walmart in Goodland, Kansas (just before the border with Colorado)
because I remembered from a previous trip with Gail that this Walmart is an easy off
and back onto the highway.

I stocked up on food and ice at Walmart.

The coolers are packed and I'm ready to survive on my own until Gail meets me in Reno.

Only a couple of hours from Denver now.

My first view of the Rocky Mountains, about 30 miles from Denver. It is noon on
Sunday.

To Denver, Colorado

Denver is 1000 miles from Dayton. I know I can drive that in a day, so my goal was to be in Denver 24 hours after I left Dayton.

I dropped mom and Cliff at the airport before 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, and hoped to reach Denver around noon on Sunday.

The first milestone, pictured to the left, is crossing the Mississippi.
