ReadyBoost -- a Vista Memory TrickI have been experimenting with a new technology in Windows Vista. It's called "ReadyBoost" and it allows the OS to work faster by using a thumb drive as virtual memory. Apparently, virtual memory on a thumb drive works faster than virtual memory on the hard drive. How much faster depends on details such as how many apps you are running. Limitations: you must be running Vista, the thumbdrive must be at least 1GB, and you must have USB 2 ports. I am using a 2 GB Kingston thumb drive that was advertised as ReadyBoost capable for Vista. When I plug the drive into my new, Vista laptop, the window to the left pops up with two options -- use the drive for storage OR use it to speed up the system by adding virtual memory. |
