Bill's Reflections 2006

Hero Worship

I have never understood hero worship. I don't appreciate why anyone would seek an autograph, watch the Academy Awards, or pay big bucks to see a rock group. In the same vein, I have little admiration for politicians, judges, or business executives. Famous people, as a result of their fame, become unable to relate honestly and naturally to regular people, and vice versa.

Recently I told someone that I didn't believe in hero worship. His response, "Maybe you don't have the right heroes." That made me stop and think. I suppose I could engage in hero worship with certain dead intellectuals and artists. I'd love to meet Van Gogh, Gauguin, Kafka -- especially if I could meet them before they became objects of fame, meet them as real people.

Another aspect to my take on hero worship involves my dad. I respected him, flaws and all. He was an ordinary person, a working man. Those are the people who have been my heroes -- working men. When I started painting, most of my early portraits were of older, working men in bars. This painting of Cecil is a tribute to one of my heroes. He, like my dad, had common sense wisdom, honesty, kindness and toughness. These heroes had flaws, and they showed their flaws. No politically correct speech, no lies of a salesman, politician, or businessman, no fear of ruining their reputations -- just straightforward, honest speech, something very hard to come by these days. I don't care for autographs, but I'll drink a beer to Cecil and my dad.
