Dayton Art Institute

Rembrandt

I went to the latest show at the Dayton Art Institute, "Rembrandt and the Golden Age of Dutch Art." Most of the pieces were not the kind of art I find really interesting -- lots of engravings, still life and nature scenes. But the technical skill in some of the works was truely amazing. It is mind-boggling to see how glass, for example, can be rendered so perfectly in paint. I think of it as "illusionist art."

More Art Institute

I usually sneak a couple of photos at these shows, but once inside
the door I never found an opportunity this time.

And look at the upcoming show -- Marilyn. Yikes! I guess they liked the
money they made from the Princess Di show last year. Shameful.

I also went to the Octoberfest this year. Gail and I met Terry and Pattie --
we would have had some great pictures (with really big beer stein, bottle
of wine, etc.), but the batteries in my camera died after the one and
only picture of the German band above.

At the Octoberfest, the Art Institute had a fence around this piece of art --
so that people wouldn't touch it, or spill something on it, or climb on it.

The Art Institute fence seemed weird after being at Burning Man where
art is created specifically FOR climbing and interacting in any way you
dare. Museums sometimes seem so lame and so removed from the
spirit of art. Right, Marilyn?
