Blab

Blab is a serial anthology of comic artists. This issue was published in the Fall of 2004 and has works by 33 artists.

I bought this book and the one immediately below in a little, alternative bookstore named Countermedia in Portland, Oregon. It is next to the giant Powell's bookstore and I get something at Countermedia almost every time I am in Portland.

Because of the variety of styles presented in these books, they serve as great, creative inspiration.

I found Weirdo Deluxe at Countermedia and it is also an anthology of artists
-- 23 lowbrow and pop surrealist artists. Lowbrow art has influences from
cartoons, satire, humor, romanticism, and anything underground, fringe,
retro or outsider.

When I was in Florida, Cliff and Amy turned me on to these books
by Christopher Buckley. Funny satires that comment on government,
alien chasers and big business. Easy, pleasant reads from the 90's.

One of my mom's favorite sayings is, "It's a great life, if you don't weaken."
So when I saw a graphic novel by that title, I had to get it. It turned out
to be a good story with a lot about the history of adult comics woven throughout.

A friend, Andy, suggested The Magician and the Cardsharp. I've just started it.
It's a biographical story of magicians and cardsharps in the early 1900's. A big
part of the story is the search for a possibly real, possibly mythical cardsharp
who can do the ultimate trick -- deal from the center of the deck.
