New Year's Eve -- December 31, 2001
To keep myself busy as I waited for the new year's eve celebration, I learned how to put RJ45 jacks onto cat 5 cable. I used the new cable to connect Gail's office to the DSL modem on the other side of the house.

I'd never done this before, but I found a template on the Web for the eight wires and I examined a piece of cable I had purchased with ends attached. |

I had a kit with tools and RJ45 jacks. |

The kit also included a tester -- and I am happy to say that my first cable tested positively for all four pairs. |

I didn't have any instructions for how the tools worked or how to get the eight wires into the proper places in the jack, but I used the old trial and error approach. |

My motivation was that one 50' piece of cable with ends was $60 at the computer store. |

I have 1000 feet of cable, tools, and 50 RJ45 jacks. |

See the "1000 FT" on the bottom right of the label? I'm ready to wire the house. |
