Comments from Students During the First Week of Class
The first assignment involved familiarizing oneself with the class Web site and the publisher's textbook Web site, and sending comments via e-mail to the professor.
Here are some of the comments received via e-mail at the start of class. Comments will also be gathered along the way and at the end of the class.

Overall Negative (only three slightly negative comments)

I have reviewed the website and I think I will find it to be very interesting, informative, and helpful in my studies. But on the other hand I must say (and I don't mean to offend you) that I learn best from in-class lectures and if I would've known this was going to be a lot of internet work I would've signed up for internet classes. I feel stuck in this class now because I had just added it on Tuesday. I really hope I get the benefits from this that you are hoping for. ---- [I sent her a note thanking her for her honesty and telling her that I look forward to hearing her opinions later in the class.]

This is my first class that I have taken that the internet is used like this. I
honestly don't know how I feel about it. On the good side on Thursdays I
don't have to go to class. But, on the down side I am unsure of how much I
will actually be learning. Who knows by the end of the quarter I could have
a completly different outlook.
The website is more then what I was expecting. I think it has a ton of
good resources for learning.

The site is well organized and promises to be a good reference for the
course. However, I know that I normally learn best in a classroom
atmosphere- with lectures and discussions. I am interested in finding out
how well I may adjust to this new form of learning.

Overall Positive

If only more classes were this way.

I must say
that I spent more time on the class Web site than I would have in the regularly schduled
class. (you are a tricky fellow aren't you! ha-ha). I really like this
format and look forward to the class.

I love the idea of using the internet as well as meeting on campus. I'm taking my first internet class this quarter (ALH 104). I'm very excited about it! I can tell by looking at your site you took time to set everything up and it is very organized....Computers are becoming a larger part of life, more and more everyday. So I think this is a wonderful opportunity to learn lifespan development as well as increase my knowledge of the internet, and computers in general.
I am looking forward to this class!!

I am very
excited about trying class online. I am having trouble
figuring out some of the things on my computer
epecially since I just downloaded Netscape. I am
pretty good with e-mail so I think we will be ok. I
surfed around the class pages you had posted and
really enjoyed them, especially the ones that the
students put together on what they learned.
....I am unsure about how to post opinions but I am
sure I will learn.I am looking forward to a fun class.

I checked out the site and I think it's great. I played some psy hangman and somehow managed to not get hung. Actually, I guessed a word that I had never heard of before- semantic- so of course I looked it up and although you probably know that it means "of the nature of a sign; significant; warning" I, well, didn't. I looked around some of the other prompts also and the forums seem very cool and I can't wait to learn how to participate. I think the site will be very beneficial not only for this class but in general. We have a very technological society and this is a great way to be part of it. The site will enrich the class experience and be an excellent resource for it as well. I am really glad that we will still meet as a class on Tuesdays because I value "old school" learning as well as the new.

Wow, I think you are putting way to much work into your website. It is the
most complete class web site I've ever seen. I was honestly expecting some
cheap half-done site that had old information on it. It looks like you did a
lot of work and I'm really impressed. I think that the online portion will
be a lot better than I initially thought. I've still never done a class (or
portion) online but I must say that this does look promising.

I think this course will be very interesting. I don't have a lot of
experience wth computers but I'm willing to give it a try.

I have to say, the first day of class I was a bit skeptical about the in-class and distance learning mix. Although, now I am changing my opinion. I
believe that this class will be someting that I remember. I have never had a
professor that was so, can you say, lenient with his students -- in the sense
that you want us to learn our own way not yours. As for the course site enritching the class I can see the benefits and
faults. More benefiting though. I am stlll not to sure on whether or not it
will "enrich" the class. I guess it would have to depend on the person
taking the class. Whether or not they are adaptable enough to abosrb what
they are doing on their own.

I was just on the web site and was
amazed. I really think this can help me learn using the
best of two worlds, class and web class. I was a
little scared at first because I didn't know what to
expect.

I've tried to get to
your web site today Wed.Sept 19th. I was told by the
folks at the teleport at SCC that there is a
problem with the Web some kind of virus. I'm not sure
this will go thru. I will try to reach you at home
tonite or tommorow nite. I was unable to get anything
to come up as far as assignments go. I'll try again
before we meet. However, this virus has affected
Dayton police, Mead etc so hopefully this can be
cleared up soon. Anyway I made an effort and will
DEFINETLY TRY AGAIN SOOON. Take care I'll see you Tues
nite.

Reviewed both the class and textbook web sites. Really like the potential for a new experience in learning interaction and the web. Puts a lot of responsibility on the learner to stay in touch and on track, something that can be missed in a traditional classroom setting -- memorize and regurgitate. ... Looking forward to the challenge of learning outside the box, see you Tuesday.

I feel that it will
probably take some getting used to but I think doing
the majority of the class work on the internet is a
really good idea. Being able to look up things about
class and the assignments etc. at your own
convenience in your own home will be a great
advantage. (Especially for a person in my position) [-- pregnant, near delivery]

I am very excited about this class. I think internet schooling is the wave of the future. The website seemed very interesting. I am most interested in kids and teens since I have 2 kids of my own
i think this was an excellant idea. See you Tues.

I am very excited about your class, first of all being a psychology major all psy classes excite me but I am also excited about the "hybrid" take on the class. Though I was one of the people that expressed I was interested in learning through the Web, I have to admit that I don't really like computers a whole lot. Not only do I not like computers, I am not very good at navigating them. I am hoping that using the computer to learn about a topic I love will help me improve my computer skills, as well as learn my way around the cyber world a little bit better. I think the class web site was great, it had a lot of interesing ideas to think about and it was fun.

I think it was a great idea to have class
via the internet, because I'm not a very computer
literate person. I feel the time I've spent on the
internet these last couple of days has been a great
benefit. I browsed through the web site and by doing
so have seen all the great things that your web sight
has to offer.I especially enjoyed the games...
I'm very apprehensive about going into
the chat room. I've never been very sociable. I've
always been the type of person that does my work by
myself.

I feel that if I can figure out the internet stuff it should be very helpful and a good
learning expierence for me. As of right now though I am not real fond of using the
computer to learn. But I am always up to learning something new and it's about time I
learn the internet.

I think that the web assignments will help me keep up
with what is going on in the new world of learning.
I think that after this class I might take mostly
distance learning classes, because your class will aid
in giving me the preparation and confidence for what
is to come. Yes, it is very convenient, and I save
money, and I like computers and learn at the same time.
I know it couldn't get any better.

I looked over the class web site and explored some of the parts of it. At
first I was unsure about taking a 1/2 computer-based class, But now that I
have seen the web site and how everything is set up I think that this will be
fun. I found the web site really easy to use and follow....I look forward to
the class discussions that we will have on line.

hey, I'm in your psy 208, tues/thurs 4:30 class.
i can't wait to get back into the swing of things. the website has changed some since i took your psy 119 class. i particularly like the refridgerator art. can't wait to get started on the message boards. i love to learn from other students and their opinions. This is really cool. Can't wait to learn this quarter!

After reviewing the online text and website, I am more inclined to believe
that this class will be able to offer me what I expected. At first I was
very put off by the idea of an online class, since I procrastinate alot, and
like tonight, saw myself doing my assignments on Monday nights. But hopefully
this class will give me a chance to change that habit. The website looks
interesting and informative.

I really think that having the class incorporate a web site with the classic learning style is wonderful. I think that the students in the class, including myself, are really going to benefit from this hybrid approach. It will really focus me to sit down and take in what I am learning, and remember it. This is definitely going to be beneficial to all who are involved!! I am looking forward to this quarter and learning more on this site.

It is nice to have a supplement that is not on paper.

I have never taken a class on the web before, but I am very excited about this new experience. I have gotten a couple of e-mails from class mates already sharing their enthusiasm about the course as well. I agree that doing this course over the internet will probably help me to interact with the class more. I have always been quiet, and this way I can still be quiet in class but interact on the web site. I really like the course web site with all the different people sharing their class assignments with me to get an idea of how different people do different things. And there is just something about being able to do my studying but not having to sit down and READ a book.
I think this course is going to be very fun and I look forward to the next couple of months.

Course Site vs. Publisher's Text Site

I think that the course site will be more
informative than the text site because of how
interactive the site is and especially with the
message boards that helps out a lot. I did glance over the text
site and was not too impressed with it at all.

I also like the text book site. I've used many sites like this and I think that they are very helpful in understanding concepts, as well as a useful tool when studying. I think that both sites will be a very valuble tool as I learn about development.

I am not sure about the book website I think it would
be heplful for memorizing but I am not sure.

I think that the text site will help out tremendously for the preparation of
tests and quizzes. I really like the flash cards that are provided for us.
Also, if we read something and do not understand it our way we can log on to
the site to see it another. That is very beneficial to a student's needs.

I'm familiar with the text web site from the PSY 119 class taken this past spring from Prof. Twe. I used it regularly for a study aid, being one of those flash card kind of students, and really like the thought provoking enrichment questions provided for each chapter. Hopefully, everyone will use this site, as it reinforces the concepts and definitions in each chapter.

I was not as impressed about the text website for a couple of reasons. First of all, on the quizes section it requires you to give personal information and I do not see the need for that. Also, it was pretty dry and boring. I am an avid reader and will probably recieve all the information I need out of the text by the old fashioned way.One good thing about the text website was that it had some great limks in the FAQ section.

I also looked at the
publishers web site and I think that this will help tie me in as far as
factual stuff. I am a person who likes to memorize the important stuff and I
feel like that web site will help me alot there and I will be able to use it
in close reference with the book.

The thing I like most about the text site is that in the FAQ section, there are a lot of links to other helpful sites.
